A Dying Man

A sixteen-week path to living well

I'm dying.
You're dying too.

Learn to live a life you'll love to death.

We all have the same prognosis. None of us knows how long we get. That leaves one question: how do you want to live? Sixteen weeks to answer it, work through what's causing you to suffer, and start living by it.

If this sounds familiar

There's a weight in your chest that you can't shake off.

What you want isn't complicated. You want to feel happy. You want to stop feeling like you're falling short of something. You want to be doing more with what you've got, you can feel that you're not, and you can't seem to figure out how to get there.

You know something needs to change. You've known for a while. So you've tried. Woke up early for a month. Read the books, kept the journal, downloaded the app. You promised yourself this week would be different and made another plan to change everything at once. Some of it worked, which is the confusing part. It worked, and then a hard week came and it was gone, and you were back where you started with one more piece of evidence that it's probably you.

The days don't stop while you work this out. You move through them, sometimes doing well and sometimes barely getting through. Underneath it you know this isn't how you want to be living, and knowing that changes nothing, which is its own particular kind of tired.

You just can't get from here to there, and the distance between the two is where most of the weight in your chest comes from.

You're not broken. That weight is the most honest thing about you: some part of you refuses to settle for a life you don't love, and it will not shut up about it.

Good. Let's listen to it.

“There's my life before meeting Adam, and my life after. His gift for healing and his generosity of spirit have touched me deeply. He's one of those rare people whose kindness changes everyone he meets—I hope everyone gets to experience that.”

02

The premise

Life is precious, and not knowing how long it will last makes it so.

If that scares you, I understand. That fear means you want to live. We're not afraid of dying. We're afraid of getting to the end and realizing we never truly lived.

Early in my career, I worked in hospice, sitting with folks who had been told they had six months or less. People often said, “It must be so sad.” Sometimes it was. Often it was peaceful, and it was always a gift. The time we spent wasn't about dying. I sat beside so many people who received a terminal diagnosis and then, in the last stage of life, started living.

You can start living the life you want at any moment.

You could wait until you're terminal. Why not choose now to live a life you'll love to death?

The honest answer

The answer for most of us:Wanting to live differently and knowing how are not the same thing.

01 / The noise

There has never been more advice about how to live, and it has not made finding your own way any easier. Self-help, therapy, podcasts, the newest framework, the next urgent thing. We spend so much of our short lives working out how we're supposed to live that we never get around to living it.

02 / The gap

Changing things blindly doesn't fix that. You can reach the goal and still feel empty. You can stand at the edge of a change you know you need and be too afraid to take it. Without your own sense of what matters, achievement and uncertainty leave you equally lost.

03 / The work

That is the work of the Path. It's the one I wish I'd had. It would have saved me the years I spent working out what was causing me to suffer.

Over sixteen weeks you'll use Guided Self-Mentorship along with a curated set of tools and experiments based on your assessment. You'll work through the particular things making your life hard, hear what matters to you underneath them, and turn what you find into changes you can live by.

Not my answers about how to live. Yours.

03

What the Path is

Eight sessions.
Sixteen weeks.
Graduate.

That last part is the difference. From the beginning, this is built to end, leaving you confident you have the skills to walk it yourself.

08Sessions
16Weeks
01Goal: outgrow me
01 / Begin

It starts with the specifics of your life.

Before the first session, a short assessment. Focused and comprehensive: I'm not going to spend three appointments collecting your history before we do anything useful.

We'll look at the challenges you're facing—overthinking, procrastination, self-esteem, relationship trouble, habits you can't shake, steps you can't take, or the sense that it all feels empty—and the other parts of your life that hold you up or wear you down.

02 / Move

Change you can feel immediately.

One hour gives us enough time to talk about what's wrong. Two gives us time to understand it and do something useful with it. That's why we start with two.

You'll learn Guided Self-Mentorship and take it straight to your greatest challenge: what's keeping you stuck, what matters to you underneath it, and what you can do about it.

03 / Practice

The schedule is part of the method.

Weekly for the first month. Every other week for the next. Then monthly for two. The first session is two hours, the rest one, with email or text support the entire time.

The gaps widen on purpose. Each one is longer than the last, so by the end you've met real difficulty without me and proved you can handle it. Guided, at first. Self-mentorship, after.

04 / Graduate

At the end.

You'll know what matters to you in a way you can act on, with habits that support it. You'll have faced hard things and handled them yourself, earning the confidence to say you know what you're doing.

The goal is for you to have the confidence to fire me, knowing you've become your own guide.

“I had a Guided Self-Mentorship session with Adam and it changed my life. The limiting belief we worked on during the session is no longer a problem for me. I felt calmer and more grounded after that session.”

Proof, measured

I measure whether this works.

At the start of my practice, I didn't. I'd finish a session feeling like it went well, book another, and see clients for months hoping something we were doing was working. Eventually, with people putting their trust in my hands, I couldn't stand not knowing anymore.

So I began measuring with every person I saw. Rate your suffering, rate your joy, before and after every session. The first thing I learned was that I wasn't as effective as I thought. That was hard. It was also the most useful information I've ever been given, because I could finally see what caused things to move.

I felt like an audience to my own life.

About a year before I found Adam, I tried seeking help and guidance with a therapist. They said, “You have functional depression. We don't need to schedule a follow up unless you want to, but there's not much you need to do if you're still functional.” The meds I had been prescribed weren't working for me, but I was “functional”. I felt crushed and alone, unsure of what to do. The days dragged on and I could barely remember what happened the day before. I felt like an audience to my own life.

Adam was one of the first people I reached out to when I decided to try seeking help again. There had to be something more than just a simple diagnosis I had been given before. I felt scared, but Adam's reply to my first message made me feel a little bit of hope again.

I dreaded the first appointment. My feelings were not something I shared as I always felt shame for having them. However, I was paying for the session and I was not gonna pay just to lie or hide things. It was the best decision I've ever made because I was finally able to feel seen and heard.

Adam's calm demeanor and acceptance of my feelings gave me hope. Not only did Adam not drop some diagnosis or label on me, I was told it can get better, and while I was skeptical, I was hopeful because I was seeing my situation more clearly and this was a lot different than my experience with therapy. And it did. It took lots of hard work, habit breaking, and honesty in my sessions, but it was worth it.

I haven't just been given the tools to succeed; I've been taught how they work, and I now understand myself in a way that gives me confidence. I now know that no matter what, I can get through this. You can too, just take that first step and let your feelings be heard. With Adam’s guidance, you’ll learn to fall in love with them (and your life) just like I did.

I thought there was something wrong with me without a shadow of a doubt. I kept getting “you're a perfect boyfriend,” but I couldn't understand—if that were true, why did I keep getting left? I must have been broken. There had to be a flaw in me that would leave me alone forever. Instead of healing, I buried it. By my junior year of college, I felt completely isolated. Then, yet another relationship ended, and this one completely broke me. I’d cry at night, thinking I was nothing.

Seeing how much it hurt my mom too, I finally agreed to seek therapy.

I discovered you through an online search, and I will never forget my first session with you. I considered not even getting out of my car, wondering if I could just push through on my own. But I showed up, and for the first time in a long, long time, I was heard. You didn’t judge me. You didn’t try to fix me. You just listened. I cried through the entire session, but by the end, something had changed. Something felt lighter, a burden lifted.

Over time, you taught me lessons I still hold onto today. As I gained mastery over my mind, the bad days still came, but they didn’t consume me the way they used to.

As our last session approached, I felt nervous—was I really ready to do this on my own? But then I realized something: I didn’t just feel better. I actually believed I was worth something. I believed I was capable of creating the life I wanted.

Now, two years later, I have lifelong friends, a career I love, and, as of yesterday, I’ve been with my girlfriend for two years. She’s everything I ever dreamed of but never thought I deserved. I owe it to your guidance, your conversations, and the space you gave me to figure things out. But I also know this—I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t made that first choice for myself.

To anyone who feels worthless or believes they don’t deserve love: take the leap. You deserve to be heard. You deserve to heal. You deserve to live.

Working with Adam was absolutely a life-changing experience for me.

Working with Adam was absolutely a life-changing experience for me. He walked with me during some of the most difficult times in my life, helping me find strength and clarity while navigating a career transition, a parent affected by addiction, a strained relationship with another parent, the loss of a step-parent, the loss of a sibling in childhood, challenges in my marriage, and parenting a very anxious child.

Adam worked with me on managing my own anxiety, managing expectations of myself and others, advocating for myself, understanding my self-worth, and strengthening my communication abilities to be a better, more present partner and parent.

I have seen many therapists in my lifetime; what sets Adam apart from others is his compassion, his relatability, his calm demeanor, his understanding, his lack of judgment, his willingness to pause during a session and take the time to form the best, most honest feedback possible, and most of all, his trust and belief in my ability to grow and find safety.

Adam deeply affected my life, and his wisdom has not only changed me, but has also (and will continue to) cause a ripple effect for the people around me. If you have the opportunity to work with Adam, I have no doubts that your life will also be forever changed in the best way possible.

Adam completely shattered all of my expectations about getting support for my mental health.

Adam completely shattered all of my expectations about getting support for my mental health, in all the good ways. When I first started seeing Adam for anxiety and panic attacks, I went into it thinking that I would have to see someone for the rest of my life. One of the first things he told me was “you can get through this, there is an end in sight”. This was such a comforting first impression that I knew I had found the right person to help me through my mental health struggles.

Before I started seeing Adam, my anxiety made it difficult to focus on everyday tasks at home and work, and my panic attacks had me fearing for my life. Adam taught me how to change my perspectives on both the world around and within me so that I could see through the haze of my anxiety. He also helped me understand what causes panic attacks and how to manage them.

This was my first experience working with someone in this capacity so I didn't know that a person could graduate, but our sessions and the mental tools he gave me helped me to get to that point. The skills I learned from Adam helped me to accept my anxiety and dramatically reduced the number of panic attacks I experienced—so much so that towards the end of my time with him I couldn't even remember the last time I had one.

I was fortunate to see Adam on two separate occasions: after graduating the first time with him, despite my best efforts using the tools he taught me, the universe just kept throwing curveballs at me to the point where I could no longer manage my anxiety and panic attacks alone. I sought Adam’s presence a second time when I was in need, and just like before he reassured me that I'd get through this.

Thank you Adam for being a part of my life and helping me through the ups and downs of mine. I will always remember what you taught me, and that has made it so that I have a life lived well.

Adam understands what it actually means to guide someone, not just try to fix them.

The thing I learned from and with Adam, as a respectful and insightful partner in self discovery, is that Trauma is not a choice. Carrying that trauma with you is. Realizing this is incredibly powerful; it means you can choose to let it go, change how heavy it is, and even choose to make your past something beautiful that you can look at from a new perspective.

It's hard to admit that you're not doing well and need someone to help you and truly listen and see the world differently. Adam is someone that understands what it actually means to guide someone, not just try to fix them or make them feel better. He’s someone who truly enjoys helping people, who can provide a comforting and safe environment free from judgement, and instead of telling you what is right, will help you better understand your needs and how to reach them.

Please take care of yourself, and if you're looking for someone to not just listen, but help you gain a new path in life, I can't recommend anyone higher than Adam.

His approach to guiding me was not just different, it has been life-changing.

I can't recommend Adam Holman enough! From the very first session, I felt heard, supported, and understood. I had tried therapy a couple of times before and it didn’t work out for me, and his approach to guiding me was not just different, it has been life-changing. He is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and empathetic, always helping me challenge negative thought patterns and replace them with healthier, more balanced perspectives.

What I appreciate most is how he creates a safe and non-judgmental space, making it easy to open up and address deep-rooted issues. Adam tailors each session to what I personally found important in that given moment, providing practical tools and strategies that I can apply in my everyday life.

Thanks to his guidance, I’ve gained a clearer sense of self-awareness and learned how to cope with stress, anxiety, and difficult emotions that I had for my entire 50-years of life in a much more constructive way. I finally feel peace, and I feel more empowered and confident in navigating life's challenges.

If you're considering getting some help, Adam is absolutely someone I would trust with some of the most important people in my life.

“My Sessions and Practices with Adam Holman using the tools of his Guided Self-Mentorship therapy have changed my life life for the better on a daily basis: more satisfying, positive, productive. I use this insightful therapy whenever I feel negative emotions, conflict or uncertainty. By identifying the thought(s) igniting these feelings I'm able to use the 3-step process to gain greater control of my resulting feelings/responses/behaviors.

And here's the bottom line for me. Why I learn and grow more using Adam's approach than I do from the traditional therapy I've experienced. The fact that the ultimate goal of Adam's Guided Self-Mentorship is to help one live their best life by using the thoughts behind challenging emotions to identify what matters most to them... then shifting to embody these values. The goal is not to feel better; the goal is to live better. And in living better, one will naturally feel better. Difficult feelings are to be learned from, not to be avoided. Thank you, Adam.”

Who this is for

This is for you if you're willing to work between sessions.

Every session ends with something to practice, whether that's a skill, an experiment, or a new habit, and you'll be doing it daily. I'm not going to sugarcoat it: it's homework. It isn't busywork. It's tailored to you, and it turns what we learn into a changed life.

01

You'll face things you've been avoiding.

That's most of where the change lives. Insight is lovely. Action turns understanding into change and gives you the confidence that you can keep doing it.

02

It's for you if insight hasn't been enough.

You may already understand why you do what you do. You still do it. That doesn't mean you need more explanation. It means you need a way to turn understanding into something you can practice.

03

It's for you if you want to be done.

Four months from now, you want to look back and see that your life has changed, and that you know how to keep changing it. This is built to end. That's bad for my finances, and great for my soul.

Who it isn't for

Not every approach is the right fit for every person.

You're looking for a diagnosis or treatment for mental illness.

The Path isn't therapy. If you need medical or therapeutic care, you deserve the right kind of support. Having a diagnosis doesn't prevent you from doing this; this simply isn't clinical treatment.

You want passive listening or ongoing weekly support.

If you want a passive process, quick fix, or change without steps outside the session, this won't work and I wouldn't want your time and money to go to waste.

You're not ready to let go of stress as your fuel.

No judgment. I ran on it for years. Instead of overwork and pressure, we build something more sustainable: self-trust.

You don't have the time or energy for work between sessions.

If you can't commit to applying what you learn, you won't get much out of this. Sometimes life is simply too full, and this may not be the right fit right now.

The Supported Path

Limited places

Freedom and joy in life aren't luxuries to be purchased. They're part of being human, and I want this in as many hands as possible. Cost shouldn't be what stops someone who is ready and determined from getting the support they need.

There are a limited number of reduced-cost and no-cost places. If money is what stands between you and this, say so on your application. Tell me what's going on and what this would mean for you.

Apply for the Supported Path
04 / Optional support

The Plant Supported Path

Cost varies

For some people, though, plant supplements accelerate things considerably. They can put the brain into a more neuroplastic state, more willing to form new patterns instead of running the old ones, and they tend to surface insight that would otherwise take months to arrive at. Alongside the work, that combination is powerful.

Cost varies depending on which supplement makes sense for you. If you're not in Chiang Mai, I can help coordinate a visit to Thailand. Mark your interest on the application and we'll talk about whether it's a fit for you.

07

Who I am

My greatest qualification is that I've been where you are.

Adam Holman laughing on the grass with friends

This is the part where I'm supposed to list my credentials, accomplishments, and a bunch of professional jargon to convince you I know what I'm doing.

Credentials are important, and they're at the bottom. But if you're here, chances are you don't want an impressive résumé. You want to know about the actual person you'd be spilling your heart out to.

I spent the first twenty-five years of my life anxious and depressed. It got bad enough that I wasn't sure I wanted to keep living. I tried therapy more than once and came away lost, confused, and fairly sure I was the problem.

Three years of studying computer science without passing a single semester. Sixteen hours a day playing video games, because nothing else I'd tried was working and it let me avoid a life I didn't want to look at.

Then I got kicked out of university, which turned out to be the beginning.

I finally stopped asking what was wrong with me and started asking what was causing me to suffer. Everything I'd been doing made sense. I wasn't broken, I was protecting myself, and I could learn to do something else instead. I felt relief for the first time in my life.

Five months later I went back to university to pass that relief on to other people. For the first time I didn't just pass. I got perfect grades, every semester, right through to graduation.

Life is a joy now. Even the smallest things bring great pleasure: slow mornings with coffee and a cat, long hikes, learning things for no reason, food that's irresponsibly spicy. I've watched versions of that turn happen in hundreds of other people, most of them getting there far faster than I did.

I'd love to say I do this out of pure selflessness. That would be dishonest. I'm a little addicted to watching people recover.

I hold a borderline ridiculous, possibly delusional belief that anyone can recover. It started as a hunch about myself. Then I watched people who came in feeling completely hopeless get there anyways. Ten years in, nothing has talked me out of it.

My own life taught me half of this. The people I've sat with taught me the rest. That's what qualifies me most, not the letters below.

Licensed therapist and LCSW, 10+ years of experience. Master's in Social Work, University of Wisconsin–Madison.
